Monica Chiozzi: when Made in Italy comes from emotions
Monica Chiozzi combined her studies regarding the conservation of artistic and cultural heritage with the earliest experiences of fashion. For a decade, she focused mainly in the field of high-end leather goods, working before as a designer for Borbonese and later with Tod’s, where the DNA of the brand became a starting point to build crisp and soberly chic projects designed for women of all ages and nationalities. The main challenge was to combine heritage brand, timeless attitude and femininity.
In September 2016, She launched her Afhra collection. The brand is named after Monica’s grandmother and wants to be a tribute to that same Africa that she dreamt of as a child and loved as an adult.
AFHRA was born as a selection of creations characterized by a polished and feminine style. The creations are design but sensual. The style is minimalist but vibrant. All products are made in Italy with great attention to quality and details.
AFHRA has a constant literary inspiration. Quotes, colours, objects, feelings, the places described in the pages of a book are translated into real objects. Many trips in the modern Morocco will be visualized through the raw pages of Mohamed Choukri. Likewise, the Africa of Joseph Conrad. Then, the feminine charm described through the poetry of Anne Sexton or the androgynous spirit told through the travel diaries of Annemarie Schwarzenbach. And a thousand more other continuous quotes and inspirations.
The creations of Spring/Summer 2017 collections are inspired by Jazz, its protagonists and the emotions it’s able to infuse – “Jazz is the music of the body. The breath comes through brass. It is the body’s breath, and the strings’ wails and moans are echoes of the body’s music. It is the body’s vibrations which ripple from the fingers. And the mystery of the withheld theme, known to jazz musicians alone, is like the mystery of our secret life. We give to others only peripheral improvisations.”
